Total is the percentage of the population age 15 and above who can, with understanding, read and write a short, simple statement on their everyday life. Generally, ‘literacy’ also encompasses ‘numeracy’, the ability to make simple arithmetic calculations. This indicator is calculated by dividing the number of literates aged 15 years and over by the corresponding age group population and multiplying the result by 100.Adult literacy rate of Bangladesh improved by 0.30 % from 74.7 % in 2019 to 74.9 % in 2020. Since the 1.55 % reduction in 2012, adult literacy rate shot up by 29.46 % in 2020.Low literacy levels and lack of quality education have long been considered the most significant contributing factors for poverty, unemployment, under-development and social isolation in Bangladesh. Sohoje Shekha, A Non Formal Learning Initiative, provides people with basic learning opportunities to create a sustainable livelihood for them & future generations.
